Summary
Maxine (Sara Crowe) is a 31-year-old drama teacher who feels depressed because she's still unmarried and doesn't seem to be making progress in her career.
She becomes even more depressed when she fails to gain promotion. The job she wanted goes to a young graduate, Louise Kilgarth (Lucinda Fisher).
Bernice (Ann Bryson) is Max's best friend. She lives in a flat upstairs with her husband Kev (John Hodgkinson) and her two children.
