Summary

Peter Banks (George Cole) is a widower who has recently been made redundant from his job as a postman. He can't afford to live on his own, so he moves in with his daughter Betty (Matilda Ziegler / Annabelle Apsion) and her husband Brian (Michael Lumsden).

Betty is very house proud, which drives Peter to distraction. As a result, he spends as much time out of the house as possible.

He meets up with Harry King (Richard Pearson) and the two become close friends. Harry lives in a large house owned by Ellie (Minnie Driver / Lesley Vickerage).

Eventually, Peter moves into a room in Ellie's house.
