John Jorrocks (Jimmy Edwards) is a down-to-earth cockney who suddenly gives up his job as a grocer to go and become the Squire in the village of Handley Cross.
Jorrocks and his wife (Angela Baddeley) quickly make an impact in the village, particularly since Jorrocks also becomes Master of Foxhounds and has to deal with the local gentry.
