Mike Bassett (Ricky Tomlinson) has been the manager of a string of top-class British football clubs. He was also the manager of the England football team, taking them to a World Cup semi-final.
Now Mike is near the end of his career and is thinking of retiring to Spain with his wife Karine (Amanda Redman. Then he's asked to take on the management of Wirral County, a club struggling at the bottom of the Football League.
