Timothy (Paul Eddington) is a middle-aged, middle-class bachelor. He has good health, a good job, money and a steady supply of attractive girlfriends.
Judy (Nanette Newman) is a widow with three children.
When Timothy gets to know Judy, he decides that he's finally found a woman he can "settle down with".
A romance develops and the two get engaged.
Timothy suddenly finds himself having to adjust to a new kind of lifestyle.
At the end of the first series, the couple get married.
The second series chronicles Timothy's attempts to become a good stepfather to Charles (Stephen Nolan), Edward (Ian Morrison) and Elizabeth (Claudia Gambold).
