Jim Dixon (Enn Reitek) returns from working abroad to try his luck in London at the height of the "Swinging Sixties".

He finds a job in publishing, later moving on to work for a film company.

Initially living in lodgings, he eventually "graduates" to a flat of his own.

Although he achieves some material success, Jim fails in his ambition to get himself fully involved in the "permissive society".

This programme was inspired by Kingsley Amis's novel, Lucky Jim.

Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais had previously scripted a series with the same title, starring Keith Barron, made in 1967.
