Kit Curran (Dennis Lawson) is a disk jockey with a small local radio station.

He does his best to talk up his own importance and influence. In reality, the radio station has a constant struggle to attract and keep listeners.

Among his colleagues are Damien Appleby (Clive Merrison) and Les Toms (Paul Brooke). Damien likes to think of himself as a 'resting' actor who's working as a continuity announcer to fill in time between acting jobs. Les is an overweight technician/producer.

In the first series, Kit has to battle to keep his job and to stay on the right side of station boss Roland Simpson (Brian Wilde).

At the beginning of the second series, Radio Newtown has been forced to close down, so Kit is looking for work. He decides to set up a pirate radio station using equipment 'borrowed' from his old workplace.
