Luther Flannery (Hugh Griffith) is an ex-merchant seaman. He lives with his house-proud daughter, who makes him stay out of the house during the day. He usually meets up with retired schoolmaster Gascoigne Quilt (Felix Aylmer) in a local church or graveyard.
Luther leads Gascoine into some unusual situations, while Gascoine does his best to improve Luther's education.
