Harry Thorpe (Paul Bown) is a hopeless AA patrolman working in a small Hampshire town in the early 1960s.
He lives with his sister, Joyce (Jo Unwin), who has an 'understanding' with his boss, Leonard Spanwick (Philip Jackson).
Leonard lives in a caravan in Harry's back garden, but hopes eventually to move into the house with Joyce.
Joyce, meanwhile, wants some glamour in her life. Unknown to Leonard and Harry, she's trying very hard to 'have a fling' with RAC patrolman Johnny Lupus (Brett Fancy).
