Leonard Swindley (Arthur Lowe) has gone bankrupt, failed in his ambition to become a local councillor and been left standing at the altar. Now he's accepted a job as assistant manager at a northern barnch of a department store.
Swindley does his best to manage his staff (mainly young women) but he isn't really up to the job.
A total of 39 episodes were made but 3 of them were never transmitted.
A sequel, Turn Out The Lights, followed in 1967.
