James Shepherd (Paul Nicholas) is a vet whose surgery is next to his home.
He has a remarried ex-wife, Helen DeAngelo (Angharad Rees) to contend with two children, Robbie (Andrew Read) and Kate (Lucy Benjamin).
To add to his problems, his veterinary assistant, Rose (Jane Briers) claims to dislike animals.
