Summary
John Fuller-Carp (John Bird) is bigoted, greedy, self-seeking and pompous. He aspires to a "glittering career" as a barrister, but his lack of real talent and his awful personality conspire against any real prospect of outstanding success.
Ruth Quirke (Sarah Lancashire) is considerably more talented and dedicated, but her chances of real success are greatly diminished by the terrible mess she's made of her private life.
Hilary Tripping (James Fleet) is amiable but rather ineffectual.
Alex Khan (Nina Wadia) replaced Ruth Quirke for the second series.
