Most of the world's population has been reduced to ash by a mysterious liquid produced in a research laboratory.
A year after the cataclysm which destroyed most of mankind, Colin Garrity (Stephen Rea) and Brian Appleyard (Ronald Pickup) are trying to carry on as normal a life as possible.
They believe themselves to be the only survivors, until they meet Graham Wilkins (Mike Grady) and his wife Janet (Josie Lawrence).
The four set up a small community in a country cottage.
